decisions and/or consult the health professional of your choice.
HERBAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE
HOT
FLASHES – Are a good indication that the body is under a lot of stress from
the hormone imbalances that menopause brings. It’s hard to be thankful for a
hot flash, but we should give the "hot flash" a bit of credit. After all,
this is the body sounding an "alarm" that says "Take care of me---I’m having
to deal with alot right now". Hot flashes are THE biggest complaint of
menopausal women and THE biggest reason they request HRT. It’s good to keep
in mind that although a hot flash seems scary/unpredictable it is actually
not an indication of a serious illness (as is a sudden high fever).
Apparently a hot flash in and of itself does not cause any damage to the
body. We should honor this signal from our body and realize that it is
trying to tell us to slow down and take care. Having a sense of humor and a
change of clothes ready is not a bad idea either. Helpful Herbs Include:
Licorice* (tonic for the adrenals). Nettles (chlorophyll rich,
nutritive and endurance building). Flaxseed oil (helps the body’s
metabolic process, supports brain function, helps balance hormones).
Cleansing herbs like Dandelion and Alfalfa (tea or tincture) are also
suggested because they detoxify and support the liver (which is busy trying
to move excess hormones out of the body). Japanese women do not experience
hot flashes to the degree that our culture does. So mimicking their diet as
much as possible is a healthy, fun and easy way to cope. Unfortunately,
rather than emulate their diet, we have invented lots of ways to make soy
taste like "a burger and fries". We’ve also gone into our labs and isolated
the isoflavones from soy and pumped them into cookies and milkshakes (power
bars & shakes) in doses 2-3 times what a normal Asian diet would include.
Instead of "fabricated" soy foods, use whole soy foods like miso,
seaweed foods, edamame. Or munch some HERBAN AVENUES dry roasted
soy nuts as a snack. If you don’t have time to prepare Japanese style
seawood foods, HERBAN AVENUES Pure Wholefood Powder can be added to
yogurt, smoothies, dips, mashed potatoes. Just ½ teaspoon of these
chlorophyll-rich powders will give you a healthy dose of protein, calcium,
and trace minerals. This is the type of nutritional support that helps the
body deal with the stresses of menopause.
Phyto-estrogenic herbs or hormone influencers are also suggested (Black
Cohosh, Red Clover, Fennel, Dong Quai, Chaste Tree or Vitex, Wild Yam).
An excellent compounded herbal for hot flashes and most other symptoms is "Phyto-Est"
by GAIA HERBS which contains Vitex (thought to be a progesterone
level regulator) Alfalfa, Wild Oat, Red Clover and cleansing,
anxiety calming herbs. (HERBAN AVENUES carries GAIA tinctures for menopause
and a "Mineralize" tea with nettles, red clover & fennel).
NIGHT SWEATS:
Try HERB SPLASH spritzer (lavender, rose or neroli) to cool down and
refresh. Keep the spritzer bottle by the bed and spray face, neck, arms,
chest. To ward off night sweats, try a bath before bed, with HERBAN AVENUES
Mid-Life Blend, Geranium or Lavender Essence. Start with warm water
(not hot), add 10 drops of essential oils and sit in tub until it goes cool.
CALCIUM
Supplementing with 1000-1500 mg. of calcium per day is suggested to
perimenopausal and menopausal women. It is best to take your calcium
supplements in 500 mg. doses (2-3 times daily) as the body is unable to
absorb more than 500 mg. at a time. Research your supplement to be sure it
is easy to absorbed. Don’t depend on your calcium supplement alone
though---it might let you down! It’s best to get your vitamins, minerals and
even your phyto-estrogens from a variety of sources. So, eat calcium rich
foods (like dark green leafy vegetables, yogurt) and drink calcium-rich
herbal teas like Red Bush (Rooi = Red + bos = Bush) and Honeybush. HERBAN AVENUES
Wholefood Powders also contain lots of bio-available calcium.
